Infinite Slope

Slope Day - Slope Day is an annual day of celebration held at Cornell University during the last day of regular undergraduate classes. It usually falls on the first Friday of May and the official site of Slope Day is the Libe Slope, on the university campus.

Slope soaring - Slope soaring is an activity whereby a pilot gains height in a full size or radio-controlled glider by flying in the updraft produced by wind blowing up the face of a steep slope. Model glider pilots commonly refer to this as "slope gliding" or "sloping".

Infinite divisibility - The concept of infinite divisibility arises in different ways in philosophy, physics, economics, order theory (a branch of mathematics), and probability theory (also a branch of mathematics). One may speak of infinite divisibility, or the lack thereof, of matter, space, time, money, or abstract mathematical objects.

Slope - The slope or the gradient is commonly used to describe the measurement of the steepness, incline or grade of a straight line. A higher slope value indicates a steeper incline.

Understanding Infinity: The Mathematics of Infinite Processes by A. Gardiner, X

Conceived by the author as an introduction to "why the calculus works" (otherwise known as "analysis"), this volume represents a critical reexamination of the infinite processes encountered in elementary mathematics. Part I presents a broad description of the coming parts, infinite slope and Part II offers a detailed examination of the infinite processes arising in the realm of number--rational infinite slope and irrational numbers infinite slope and their representation as infinite decimals. The Immanence of the Infinite: Hans Blumenberg and the Threshold to Modernity by Elizabeth Brient,

Most scholars would agree that there is an epochal threshold between the world of the Middle Ages infinite slope and the modern world. Agreement on the nature infinite slope and dynamic structure of that threshold is harder to come by. Hans Blumenberg's original infinite slope and compelling account of the transition from medieval to modern, given in his 1966 work The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, has received wide attention. Elizabeth Brient begins her own account of the transition with an extensive, critical assessment of central aspects of Blumenberg's work. She elucidates his "dialogical" method of historical explanation, then discusses the shortcomings of his defense of the "legitimacy" of modernity. The transition to the modern world is marked by the process of making infinite the finite medieval cosmos. Whereas Blumenberg focused on the spatial infinitization of the universe, Brient claims that the process must be understood intensively as well as extensively. In the now-infinite universe of the new science, the problem of finding a measure for man's self-assertive activity, infinite slope and for human knowledge, comes to the fore. The second half of the book focuses on the way in which this difficulty is addressed with conceptual resources developed in the tradition of late medieval Neoplatonism, in particular in the speculative thought of Meister Eckart infinite slope and Nicholas of Cusa. Specific attention is given to the way in which Cusanus' notion of the immanence of the infinite in the finite responds to the need for a regulative ideal for human knowing.
